Regular Hedge Maintenance vs One-Off Work

Regular maintenance keeps a hedge inside the shape it already has. Cuts are lighter, the finish is cleaner, there is far less material to clear away and the hedge stays dense rather than opening up. For most Canterbury hedges that means one to three cuts across the growing season, depending on the species and how tidy you want it kept.

One-off work suits a hedge that has been left, a property being prepared for sale or a new owner inheriting overgrown plantings. It is a bigger cut with more waste, so it is quoted separately, and you are welcome to move onto a maintenance schedule afterwards to keep it at that standard.

Shaping and Hedge Reductions

Shaping is about restoring straight lines and even faces — squaring up the top, bringing the sides back to a consistent plane and dealing with the bulges that appear when a hedge is cut by eye over several years.

A reduction goes further and takes real height or width off a hedge that has outgrown its space, blocked light, crowded a driveway or grown over a fence line. How far a hedge can be cut back depends on the species and how much old wood is behind the green growth, so we will tell you honestly what a reduction will look like before we do it rather than leaving you with a bare hedge you did not expect.

Shrub Trimming and Small-Tree Pruning

Shrubs are trimmed at the same visit where it makes sense, so the whole planting looks consistent instead of a sharp hedge beside shaggy borders. That includes cutting back shrubs that have grown across paths or windows and removing dead or excessive growth.

Small trees can be pruned where the work is genuinely within normal garden-maintenance scope and can be done safely from the ground or a stable ladder. We are a lawn and garden maintenance team, not arborists — climbing work, large tree pruning or removals, and anything near power lines or structures is outside what we take on, and we will say so and recommend you engage a qualified arborist.

Clippings and Green-Waste Removal

Hedge work produces a lot of material, and a job is not finished until it is gone. Clippings are raked and gathered from beds, lawns and garden edges, and paths, driveways and hard surfaces are blown down before we leave.

Green-waste removal can be included in your quote, or material can be left on site if you would rather use your own bin or compost. Because volume is the main cost driver on hedge work, we confirm which you want when quoting so the price reflects it.

Access, Height and Site Considerations

Before quoting we need to know how tall the hedge is, how long it runs, how wide it has grown and what is on either side of it. A hedge you can walk both sides of is a very different job to one against a fence, over a bank or hard against a neighbouring property.

Very large, very tall, steeply sited or hazardous hedges may need a site assessment first, and in some cases the right answer is a specialist contractor with equipment we do not carry. We would rather tell you that up front than take on work we cannot finish to a standard we are happy with.
